On Friday, at the age of 89, actress Maggie Smith passed away, widely known for her roles in Harry Potter and the TV series Downton Abbey. The news was reported by the BBC, citing a statement from her family.
“We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Dame Maggie Smith,” her sons Toby Stephens and Chris Larkin said in a statement.
Maggie Smith passed away peacefully in a hospital early this morning. She is survived by her two sons and five grandchildren.

Maggie Smith was a towering figure in British theater and film, with achievements ranging from Broadway to numerous legendary films. She received honors from the British Crown, starred alongside Whoopi Goldberg in Sister Act, and will forever be remembered as Professor McGonagall from the Harry Potter series.
