Amazon has denied claims that it is planning to reveal how much the product prices have increased as a result of the tariff levied by former President Donald Trump, called recent reports “wrong” on the issue.
According to Reuters, the company issued a statement on Tuesday, when the White House criticized the alleged step, called it a “hostile and political act”.
The original report published by Punchbowl News cited a source familiar with internal discussions in Amazon, who claimed that the company was preparing to display tariff-related cost hike on product listing on its platform.
Amazon pushes back
In response, an Amazon spokesman said that the company has never considered adding tariff data to its main retail website, nor has it implemented any such facility. The spokesperson clarified, “A team that operates our discount-centered Amazon Hall Storefront, discovered the idea of listing the import duty on select items-but as far as it went, the spokes.”
The White House press secretary Karolin Lewit while addressing the subject during a briefing said that Trump was made aware of the report and dismissed it as a political attack. “He said,” he called it an hostile act by President Trump. Levit also pointed to a 2021 Reuters report, claiming that Amazon first participated with a Chinese state-linked media unit to launch a project known as China Books-an online storefront hosted on Amazon.com.
When asked about Trump’s current relationship with Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, Levit sidelined the question. Along with other technical leaders, Bezos attended Trump’s inauguration and Amazon was one of the companies that contributed millions of dollars to the event.
Trump later told reporters that he had a phone conversation with Bezos in the first day. “He was very good,” said Trump. “He quickly decided the issue and did the right thing.”
