Apple embraces the web: now offering podcasts online

After recently launching the web version of Apple Maps, Apple has now made its Podcasts available through web browsers as well.

Users can access the fully functional web app at podcasts.apple.com, which offers a similar experience to the mobile and macOS desktop versions. It works seamlessly across popular browsers like Safari, Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and their derivatives.

Podcasts can be listened to without signing in, though this limits users to streaming individual episodes. For those who sign in, additional features become available, such as the ability to subscribe to shows and sync their progress. This means you can start a podcast in your browser and pick up where you left off on another device. The platform includes a comprehensive catalog of podcasts, divided into categories with rankings of both shows and episodes, and it even offers region-specific content.

However, the web version is missing some features compared to its app counterparts. For instance, podcasts cannot be downloaded, and there are no notifications for new episodes. Additionally, transcriptions (available for podcasts in English, German, French, and Spanish) are absent on the web version. There may be other limitations, but these are the most noticeable ones I found during testing.

One useful feature is the ability to directly link to individual shows or episodes, and there’s also an option to embed the podcast player on your own website.
