A nationwide workers’ strike in Belgium is set to disrupt air travel, with major airports announced significant cancellation.
Brussels’ Charleroi Airport will suspend all departures on Tuesday, April 29, while according to Reuters, Brussels Airport in Zaventum has cut its operation for about one third.
Brussels Airport (Zaventum) said in a statement that the strike would affect several important services, including goods handling and safety. Belgian news agency Belga said that at least 30% of the prescribed departure would be canceled from the Zavenum, as well as possible disruption to come along with flights.
Charleroi Airport announced that due to a severe staff lack, that day any outbound flights would be unable to operate safely. However, upcoming flights are expected to continue as per the plan.
The strike organized by Belgium Labor Unions is a protest against the new government’s policy agenda, including controversial pension reforms. Under the new system, workers who continue to work after reaching the age of retirement and have completed at least 35 years of service will be rewarded, while other may see less benefits.
