Every second pole considers moving abroad

Poland’s dream destinations have shifted, with Spain, Italy, and Germany overtaking traditional favorites like the United States and the United Kingdom.

Over half of Poles are contemplating leaving their country, according to a public opinion survey released on Thursday by ARC Rynek i Opinia, a Polish market research institute. Spain emerged as the top destination of choice, as reported by the PAP news agency.

Historically, the United States and the United Kingdom were among the most desirable destinations for Poles. However, the U.S. now ranks fourth, behind Spain, Italy, and Germany. Meanwhile, the U.K. has “fallen to the bottom of Polish preferences,” according to the survey’s authors.

Respondents were also asked how closely their current lives aligned with their ideal lifestyle. The findings revealed widespread dissatisfaction. Only residents in four of the 17 surveyed countries considered their lives to be very close to their ideal. Countries like Japan, Greece, and Bulgaria ranked among the most dissatisfied.

“There’s a common perception that Poles complain a lot, but the study shows that people in other nations often complain even more, especially when it comes to dissatisfaction with their country,” said Adam Czarnecki, Vice President of ARC Rynek i Opinia.

The survey was conducted by IRIS, represented in Poland by ARC Rynek i Opinia. It included 18 countries and was carried out between January and March 2024, sampling 500 people aged 18 and over in each country. In Poland, the sample size was 1,000 respondents.
