The severe weather conditions, including torrential rains and heavy snowfall in the Alps, have given at least four deadly results in Italy, France and Switzerland.
According to DPA and AFP reports on Friday, storms triggered avalanche, flood, comprehensive electrical outage and road closure.
In some parts of the Alps, the snowfall reached one meter. A 64 -year -old man and his 33 -year -old son lost their lives after flood waters, near Visenza in the Venneto region of Italy, while helping in emergency efforts. In the Pidmont area, the body of a 92 -year -old man was found inside his flooded house on Thursday.Meanwhile, a woman died of a heart attack after being caught in an avalanche, at the France’s Wal Thorrance Ski Resort. In Tignes, local authorities ordered the residents to stay indoors after more than 1.1 meters of snow.
Avalanche Risk Risk Closes Roads and Ski Resorts
The avalanche warning reached its highest level in many French regions, which shut down several ski resorts. While the snowfall in April is not uncommon in the Alps, the amount and intensity of the recent snow storm caught both the residents and the authorities by the guard.
Heavy snow also gave blankets to high altitude areas in Switzerland. The access to Zermat’s ski resort remains difficult, with electrical outage affecting large areas. Major routes such as the Simplon Pass and the Great St. Bernard pass are closed. On Thursday alone, more than half a meter of snow fell in some parts of Switzerland, which greatly increased the avalanche risk. Sion City officials advised all 36,000 residents to stay indoors.
