Portugal has brought the last of the wildfires raging in the northern part of the country under control, local firefighters announced on Friday, as reported by AFP.

The wildfires, which started last Sunday due to extreme heat and strong winds in the northern and central regions, have resulted in at least seven fatalities and 161 injuries, with at least 14 people seriously hurt, according to the Portuguese news agency Lusa.

However, the official count from the Portuguese National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection (APNEC) lists five deaths, as two additional victims passed away from sudden health complications related to the fires. APNEC chief André Fernandes confirmed in a Friday press conference that firefighters had successfully gained control of all remaining fires that were still burning earlier in the day.
