Sales of electric vehicles in Europe rose by 4.2% to 300,000 units, with notable growth in the UK, Italy, Germany, and Denmark.

Global electric vehicle sales surged nearly a third year-on-year in September, driven by record-breaking sales in China and renewed growth in Europe.

A total of 1.69 million battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrids were sold worldwide last month, according to Rho Motion. This represents a 30.5% increase compared to the same month last year. China’s sales contributed significantly, climbing by 47.9% to a record 1.12 million vehicles. In contrast, sales in the U.S. and Canada saw a more moderate increase of 4.3%, reaching 150,000 units.

In Europe, electric vehicle sales grew by 4.2%, totaling 300,000 units, driven by a 24% surge in the UK and improved sales in Italy, Germany, and Denmark. The Chinese market continues to outperform expectations, and sales “could set records every month through the end of the year,” said Charles Lester of Rho Motion. He also highlighted the encouraging 7% year-on-year growth in Germany.

Rho Motion now forecasts that electric vehicle sales in Europe will reach 3.78 million units in 2025 and 9.78 million by 2030, representing downward revisions of 24% and 19% from their previous estimates.
