The Greek government is continuing its support for electric mobility by extending free parking privileges for electric vehicle (EV) owners in urban parking zones until the end of 2026.
This initiative, originally launched in 2020, expired at the end of 2024 but was reinstated after a brief suspension. The news was reported by Electrive. According to Greece’s Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, EV owners can apply for a new parking permit online via the government’s official website. Once approved, they will receive a special sticker allowing them to park for free in designated city parking zones. However, this benefit does not apply to privately managed parking facilities.
The free parking incentive applies exclusively to fully electric vehicles and low-emission cars with CO2 emissions not exceeding 50 g/km. The measure is currently set to remain in effect until December 31, 2026, with the possibility of further extension.
This initiative is part of Greece’s broader strategy to promote the transition to electric mobility. In 2020, the government introduced a range of incentives, including subsidies covering up to 15% of the purchase price of electric vehicles, investments in charging infrastructure, and the free parking policy.
Despite these efforts, Greece’s EV policies have faced criticism. In 2024, the Ministry of Shipping issued a decree limiting the battery charge level of electric vehicles transported on ferries to a maximum of 40%, citing safety concerns.
