Mercedes develops solar paint for cars

Spread the love

Mercedes-Benz engineers are working on a groundbreaking solar paint technology that could extend the range of electric vehicles (EVs) by up to 12,000 kilometers annually. According to Interesting Engineering.

Revolutionary photovoltaic paint

The development goes beyond traditional mechanical components, showcasing Mercedes’ commitment to advancing automotive technology. Engineers believe this new photovoltaic paint could transform the EV industry.

The paint layer is incredibly thin—just five micrometers thick, significantly thinner than a human hair, which measures 50 to 120 micrometers. A surface area of 11 square meters covered with the paint could generate enough energy annually to power a vehicle for up to 12,000 kilometers under ideal conditions.

The solar layer is versatile and can be applied to various surfaces. It incorporates a nanoparticle-based paint that allows up to 94% of sunlight to pass through, optimizing energy conversion.

This innovation could set a new standard for sustainable automotive solutions while addressing the range limitations of electric vehicles.
