The decision is opposed by Milan’s mayor, Giuseppe Sala.
ROME: The main international airport in Milan, located in northern Italy, will soon bear the name of the late former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. This announcement was made on Friday by Italy’s Minister of Transport, Matteo Salvini. Milan’s Malpensa Airport, situated approximately 50 kilometers outside the city, will officially be renamed “Aeroporto Silvio Berlusconi.” The name change was decided by the Italian Civil Aviation Authority (ENAC).
Milan’s mayor, Giuseppe Sala, opposes the decision. He argues that the name of the airport cannot be changed because, according to regulations, public buildings and squares can only be named after a notable person ten years after their death.
Despite numerous scandals, Berlusconi served as Prime Minister four times. He passed away in June 2023 at the age of 86. Born in Milan in 1936, Berlusconi became a media mogul and founded his own conservative party, Forza Italia, in the 1990s, transitioning into politics. He also led the football club AC Milan for many years.
Milan is served by three airports: the largest, Malpensa; the smaller Linate; and the regional Milan-Bergamo Airport.
