The Assassin’s Creed series is ramping up again. Ubisoft has already shown us Codename Hexe, set in the Holy Roman Empire, and earlier this week we reported on the unveiling of the new Assassin’s Creed Shadows, which debuted its first trailer. However, the gaming giant has now angered fans of the series with one of its decisions.
Ubisoft has never hidden the fact that it offers microtransactions in its single-player games and likes to charge players for additional content. This time, however, they have locked two missions at launch: one will only be available to players with the Season Pass, and the other only to those who pre-order the game. This might not be a huge issue since most players who play on launch day will likely have pre-ordered. The real problem lies with the Season Pass, which will only be immediately available to those who purchase the Gold Edition or higher.
If you want to play both missions on launch day, you’ll need to pay up to 100 euros. This decision is controversial because both missions will be ready at launch, meaning the developer has no additional work beyond the game’s overall development to provide this content. This isn’t the first time Ubisoft has locked Day One content behind an additional paywall, as they did the same with Star Wars Outlaws, which is coming on August 27th and will require a Season Pass for the Jabba the Hutt mission.
Verified leaker Tom Henderson also revealed that Assassin’s Creed Shadows will feature smaller Battle Passes available on the Infinity platform. These Battle Passes will be called Projects, each consisting of twenty levels that unlock new cosmetic items. Criticism has already surged on Reddit, with fans saying they definitely don’t plan to support Battle Passes in single-player games.
