A Delta Air Lines aircraft crashed while landing at Toronto Pearson International Airport on Monday, with 80 people on board.
According to the latest reports, at least 18 individuals sustained injuries, as reported by DPA.
Three in Critical Condition
“Initial reports confirm no fatalities, and 18 injured passengers have been transported to nearby hospitals,” Delta stated in an official release. Emergency responders told AFP that three individuals are in critical condition—a child, a 60-year-old man, and a 40-year-old woman.
Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian acknowledged that the airline is still gathering details about the incident.
“Our hearts go out to those affected by today’s incident at Toronto Pearson International Airport,” Bastian said. “I want to extend my gratitude to the many Delta and Endeavor team members, as well as the first responders.”
Aircraft Overturned on Snow-Covered Runway
The flight, operated by Delta’s regional partner Endeavor Air, originated from Minneapolis, according to AFP. Footage from the airport shows the overturned CRJ-900 aircraft on a snow-covered runway. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that all 76 passengers and four crew members were safely evacuated.
Following a temporary shutdown, both arriving and departing flights resumed normal operations.
Heavy Snowfall Reported
Canadian authorities have yet to determine the exact cause of the crash. The airport had reported over 50 centimeters (approximately 20 inches) of snowfall in the past week. Even before Monday’s incident, dozens of flights had been delayed due to severe weather, according to Sky News.
The Transportation Safety Board of Canada has dispatched a team of investigators to the crash site.
