Crowds welcomed him at the airport, waving Singaporean and Vatican flags.
On Wednesday, Pope Francis arrived in Singapore, the final stop of his 12-day apostolic journey through Southeast Asia and the Pacific. This visit was reported by news agencies Reuters & AFP.
Upon his arrival, the Pope was greeted by large crowds at the airport, waving flags from Singapore and the Vatican. During his stay, Pope Francis is scheduled to meet with political leaders, including President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and Prime Minister Lawrence Wong. He will also celebrate Mass at the National Stadium, where an estimated 55,000 people are expected to attend.
Pope Francis is only the second Pope to visit Singapore, following Pope John Paul II’s visit in 1986. Singapore, a city-state with a population of 5.92 million, is home to around 210,000 Catholics.
The Pope arrived in Singapore from East Timor, where he held a Mass on Tuesday that drew an estimated 600,000 attendees, representing nearly half of the country’s population. Prior to that, he visited Indonesia and Papua New Guinea as part of his Asia-Pacific tour. Pope Francis is expected to return to the Vatican on Friday.
