Porsche 911 turbo celebrates 50 years

The Porsche 911 is one of the longest-running production cars in history.

Over the years, it has undergone significant changes, and the same can be said for the Porsche 911 Turbo. This iconic model began its journey 50 years ago in 1974, building on the concept introduced in 1973 known as the Porsche 911 Turbo RSR. These dates are key to understanding the significance of the new special edition, 50 Years.

The Porsche 911 Turbo is an automotive icon, and for the 50 Years edition, it’s based on the powerful Turbo S model. For context, the Turbo S produces 478 kW (650 hp), with 800 Newton meters of torque and a redline at 7,200 RPM. With this powerhouse setup, the car can reach speeds of up to 330 km/h and sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.7 seconds. It can also hit 200 km/h in 8.9 seconds. The car weighs 1,640 kg, which is considered relatively light by today’s standards.

The Turbo S comes equipped with a standard 3.8-liter twin-turbo flat-six engine and all-wheel drive. It also features an automatic dual-clutch transmission. These specifications remain the same for the 50 Years edition, but what sets this special edition apart?

The most noticeable change is the use of a unique gray-brown color for some exterior details. This color, named Turbonite by Porsche, is applied to elements such as the badges, door handles, and certain interior accents. Additionally, the rear of the car features a badge near the spoiler that commemorates the production years of the model, along with a “Turbo 50” emblem on the rear that repeats throughout the interior. These details serve as a reminder of the special edition and pay homage to the car’s heritage.

Inside, the 50 Years edition showcases special upholstery featuring checkered fabrics—a nod to the original 1973 Porsche 911 Turbo RSR concept, which debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show. While some may see these retro touches as unnecessary, others will appreciate the tribute to Porsche’s history.

For those looking to further personalize their car, an optional Heritage Design package is available. This package enhances the interior with more checkered fabric and adds a new logo to the hood and steering wheel, designed to resemble the vintage logos from early Porsche models.

If you’re interested in owning the Porsche 911 Turbo 50 Years edition, act quickly—production is limited to just 1,974 units, with each one priced about €30,000 more than the standard Turbo S. And for those who really want to celebrate the anniversary in style, Porsche offers an exclusive anniversary-themed watch to complement your purchase.
