Rescue teams are in contact with two individuals trapped under the rubble of the collapsed concrete structure.
At least 11 people were killed on Friday when part of the railway station roof in Novi Sad, Serbia, collapsed. Another three people were rescued and hospitalized with serious injuries, according to Serbian Interior Minister Ivica Dačić, who indicated that the death toll may still rise.
The incident occurred shortly before noon, though the cause remains unknown. Dačić described the rescue operations as exceptionally challenging. Approximately 80 emergency responders from multiple areas were deployed, managing by evening to retrieve two women from the wreckage, including a 14-year-old girl, who remain in critical condition, according to local hospital reports.
“This is a dark Friday for all of Serbia and Novi Sad,” Serbian Prime Minister Miloš Vučević told reporters. “Though this building was constructed in 1964, we will ensure those responsible for this tragedy are identified,” Reuters reported.
Local media shared footage of emergency personnel and heavy machinery at the station in central Novi Sad, Serbia’s second-largest city and the administrative hub of the Vojvodina autonomous region.
