Heavy snowfall has caused significant disruptions across South Korea, leading to mass collisions, flight cancellations, and halted ferry operations.
At least four people have lost their lives, according to Reuters. The country has been grappling with extreme weather for two consecutive days, with the snowstorm creating widespread logistical and transportation challenges.
Third-Heaviest Snowfall in Over 100 Years
Seoul recorded its third-heaviest snowfall since weather observations began in 1907, as reported by Yonhap News Agency. The severe conditions have particularly impacted Incheon International Airport, where multiple flights were delayed or canceled on Thursday. Ferry services on 99 routes across 76 destinations were suspended. Train services also experienced delays, and numerous traffic collisions occurred due to icy road conditions.
Schools and Public Services Disrupted
Schools in Gyeonggi Province, adjacent to Seoul, were authorized to cancel classes if necessary to ensure safety. The government advised caution as snowfall continued to disrupt daily life.
Warmer Ocean Temperatures to Blame
Unusually high ocean temperatures west of Korea have been linked to the heavy snowfall, noted Reuters.
The storm has extended its impact to neighboring North Korea, where more than 10 centimeters of snow were reported by the country’s state television.
