The application couldn’t withstand the competition.

The well-known chat application ICQ is completely shutting down after 28 years. This communication platform was particularly popular in the first decade of the 21st century until it was entirely overshadowed by the social network Facebook.

The Russian company VK, which has owned ICQ since 2010, has decided to discontinue it, as reported on their website. “ICQ will cease to function on June 26. You can chat with friends on VK Messenger and with colleagues on VK WorkSpace,” stated the Russian owners, referencing the social network VK, known for spreading Russian propaganda and hoaxes.

ICQ was founded by four Israeli programmers back in 1996. Through it, people could exchange messages and even play games.
