A few weeks after renaming the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the name of the “American Gulf”, US President Donald Trump has now swims the idea of changing the name of Persian Gulf – a step that has promoted Swift Baclash from Iran.
Speaking on Wednesday, Trump said that he is considering whether to mention the body of water separating Iran from the Arabian Peninsula by a different name. A final decision is expected to be held next week during their upcoming visit to Saudi Arabia, Qatar and United Arab Emirates – the first visit to the Middle East in its second term. The comment was reported by AP and AFP.
According to American media cited by AFP, Trump is bending towards calling it a “Gulf of Arabia”, aligning with the vocabulary liked by many Arab states. Trump said, “I don’t want to offend anyone,” said Trump when asked about the possible name change. “I will get a complete briefing and decide.”
Sources suggest that the idea came to Trump when he publicly stated that the name of the Gulf of Mexico should be changed to “American Gulf”.
Iran did not waste any time to condemn the proposal. Irani’s Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Argchi responded rapidly on social media, wrote: “Political efforts showed the Persian Gulf’s efforts to change the historically recognized name of the Persian Gulf, showing hostile intentions towards Iran and its people.”
