Turn your bike into an e-bike in 30 seconds: just mount the motor on the seatpost

The Livall PikaBoost is a new innovation that started as a crowdfunding project. It’s an electric motor designed for easy attachment to a bike’s seatpost.

Weighing just three kilograms, including the battery, it offers up to 30 kilometers of range on a single charge.

The device is a compact, rounded box that attaches to the seatpost above the rear wheel. Inside, you’ll find the electronics, a 234 Wh battery, and a 250-watt electric motor. The power transfer is managed by a roller that presses against the top of the rear wheel. After installing the motor, hub, and battery (known as a conversion kit), you can transform your old bike into an electric one, making rides smoother and reducing strain on your joints. This simple installation requires no tools, making it more convenient than many other conversion kits, and it can be used on multiple bikes.

The roller, which ensures the motor’s power is transferred to the wheel, is designed to resist wear and works with various tire widths, even in wet conditions. The unit itself is water and dust resistant with an IP66 rating.

One important consideration is how the device ensures adequate pressure between the roller and the tire to deliver effective electric assistance.

PikaBoost offers three modes:

  • Cruise Mode automatically maintains your speed, even if you stop pedaling.
  • Roll Mode provides extra help when going uphill or over rough terrain but switches off on flat ground or downhill.
  • Exercise Mode adds resistance through regenerative braking, giving you a workout as you ride.

The device also includes smart electronic features. It detects when the cyclist is braking through built-in accelerometers, cutting power to the motor and activating regenerative braking. The integrated rear light acts as a brake light during this process. Additionally, the system adjusts motor performance based on pedaling cadence and slope.

PikaBoost also features a USB port, allowing you to charge your phone or other devices while on the go. You can even purchase additional batteries that double the range by simply connecting them to the unit. Another notable feature is the Bluetooth lock, which automatically disables the motor when the owner moves out of range.
