Nine EU member states in the Mediterranean region aim to create a renewable energy hub.

Energy officials from nine European Union (EU) member states in the Mediterranean region announced plans on Monday to transform the area into a center for renewable energy and to explore ways to facilitate cross-border projects, according to Reuters.

Representatives from the MED9 group (Croatia, Slovenia, Cyprus, Greece, Malta, Italy, France, Portugal, and Spain) are set to analyze specific opportunities and challenges to turn the region into a green energy hub.

“We call on the European Commission to work closely with us in assessing resource availability,” the energy ministers or their representatives stated in a joint declaration following their meeting in Larnaca, Cyprus.

On Saturday, Cyprus and Greece agreed to collaborate on the creation of an undersea power cable linking mainland Europe with Cyprus, reducing the island’s energy isolation as it continues to generate electricity using heavy fuel oil.
