The EU, the UK, and the USA are set to sign the agreement, which will be legally binding.

On Thursday, the European Union, the United Kingdom, and the United States are likely to sign the first legally binding international treaty on the use of artificial intelligence, according to The Financial Times.

The Council of Europe has been working on this AI convention for more than two years, in collaboration with over 50 countries, including Canada, Israel, Japan, and Australia.

The United States has committed to ensuring that AI technologies respect human rights and democratic values. A senior Biden administration official highlighted the important role of the Council of Europe in this effort.

UK Technology Minister Peter Kyle stated that this is the first global agreement of its kind and brings together a diverse group of nations.

The Council of Europe’s AI Framework Convention addresses issues such as human rights, democracy, and the rule of law. It was developed by the Committee on Artificial Intelligence (CAI), which completed the draft in March. The Convention was adopted by the Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers on May 17 and will be open for official signing on September 5 in Vilnius.
