A decade filled with speculation and anticipation from fans has finally ended. The sci-fi series Riddick is set to expand with another installment, which will see Vin Diesel returning to the lead role, with production starting in the near future.
The film was first discussed in 2014, and now it returns with a new chapter titled Riddick: Furya, which will be the fourth installment of the series. Shortly after the release of the last film in 2013, Vin Diesel expressed his desire to return to the character of Riddick. Now, this plan is becoming a reality.
Intense discussions about this new film began in 2021, when the script was already completed. However, information then went quiet, raising concerns among viewers that the continuation might be cancelled. However, we will finally see it materialize, as Variety reports that filming for Riddick: Furya will start in August of this year, and the film could hit theaters by the end of next year or in the first half of 2026.
The first details about the plot have also been revealed, suggesting that this notorious criminal will have to confront his past.
The film’s production will once again be helmed by director David Twohy, who was behind the camera for the first three installments of the series. It is not yet known whether characters from previous films will appear in the new movie, but it would be a shame if the creators decided to take a completely new direction.
The question remains as to what budget the new Riddick: Furya will have at its disposal. Universal Studios significantly invested in the second film, pouring in as much as $120 million, which ultimately did not pay off since the film only earned $106 million and ended as a commercial failure. Based on this experience, funding for the third film was significantly reduced, and it ultimately earned an encouraging $100 million at the box office. These figures supported the discussion of a fourth installment, which after ten years of waiting is finally becoming a reality.
