Two activists from the group Last Generation glued themselves to the tarmac near a private jet at Sylt Airport.
On Saturday, two climate activists from the group Last Generation (Letzte Generation) glued themselves to the tarmac beside a private jet at the Sylt resort airport in Germany. According to a report by DPA, the police promptly detained the activists.
The group stated that the activists intended to spray-paint the words “Oil kills” on the jet, but airport staff intervened before they could carry out the act. The activists managed to reach the plane after cutting through a fence. Both women were eventually freed from the tarmac and taken into custody. A third individual, caught at the fence, was also detained by the police. According to DPA, the action did not disrupt air traffic at Sylt Airport.
“Today’s protest in Sylt didn’t go as planned, but that happens sometimes. It doesn’t mean we’ll stop,” said Christian Bergemann, a spokesperson for the group.
The German island of Sylt in the North Sea is known as a haven for the wealthy and famous, whom the activist group holds particularly responsible for climate change due to their extravagant lifestyles.
In June of last year, five activists sprayed a private jet at Sylt Airport with orange paint. The damage caused was estimated at a minimum of one million euros, according to the Flensburg district prosecutor’s office.
