A big reset of the DC universe is approaching, and next summer will kick off a new phase of the iconic comic brand Superman. Producer Peter Safran and renowned director James Gunn will determine the new direction of DC, having been given a free hand and great freedom by Warner Bros. Discovery.
James Gunn, who directed the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy for the rival Marvel universe, will helm the new Superman from the director’s chair. The sought-after filmmaker has now released the first image from the film, featuring the main star in the iconic costume with a red cape.
30-year-old David Corenswet will play the lead role in the film, having been chosen over Henry Cavill, who portrayed Superman in previous films. Although Cavill was speculated to be returning, James Gunn ultimately favored the younger but visually similar Corenswet.
While both actors share some similarities, the new Superman intends to interpret his role significantly differently from his predecessor. In an interview with Variety, James Gunn hinted at a different take on Superman, admiring Henry Cavill’s work and his darker portrayal, but envisioning the iconic hero differently in his rendition.
The premiere of Superman is scheduled for July 11, 2025.
