Legendary Italian-American driver and 1978 F1 World Champion Mario Andretti will join the board of the sport’s newest team.
Formula 1, the pinnacle of motorsport governed by the FIA, currently features 10 teams. However, the 2026 season will bring a significant shake-up with the addition of an 11th team to the grid.
According to the official Formula 1 website, a new agreement between F1 management and General Motors (GM) has paved the way for the Cadillac team to join the competition.
“The commitment of General Motors and Cadillac to this project is a meaningful and positive demonstration of the growth and evolution of our sport. We look forward to progress and success, with full collaboration and support from all parties involved,” said F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali.
This partnership is seen as a valuable opportunity to expand the sport. GM is also set to become a future supplier of power units for F1 cars. Joining the leadership of the GM/Cadillac F1 team is 84-year-old Mario Andretti, who will lend his extensive experience to the venture.
“I’ll offer advice, inspiration, and friendship wherever I can,” Andretti stated about his role, adding that while he won’t be involved in daily operations, he will remain available to provide guidance as needed.
