Greek islands without airports cut off due to ferry strikes

Ferry transport is crucial in Greece, given the number of inhabited islands.

For the third consecutive day, ferry services in Greece have been disrupted due to a strike by local sailors demanding higher wages. According to DPA, ferries will remain out of operation through Friday.

This situation leaves tourists and residents on islands without airports stranded, and some islands are also facing supply shortages, as reported by Greek state television.

The Panhellenic Seamen’s Federation (PNO) is demanding a 15% wage increase for next year, while employers are offering a gradual 3% raise over the year, which is above the current inflation rate in Greece. The sailors have threatened further protests if their demands are not met.

Given the large number of inhabited islands in the Aegean Sea, ferry transport in Greece is as essential as rail transport in other parts of Europe, notes DPA.
