Harvard University has filed a federal case against the Trump administration, challenging the decision to freeze $ 2.2 billion in multi-year-old federal grants.
The case submitted in the Massachusetts Court on Monday accuses the government of using financial pressure to threaten educational freedom and increase political control. The case was first reported by AFP.
In the complaint, Harvard alleged that the administration was illegally preventing federal funds to force the university to comply with political inspection. The university argues that this step first violates the amendment, which protects the freedom of speech, and violates many federal laws and rules. Harvard is demanding that the freeze be lifted immediately.
Danger for tax-free status
Last week, former President Donald Trump increased his criticism by threatening to cancel Harvard’s tax-free situation, until it was presented to increase federal monitoring, called it a “political organization”. This followed his earlier steps to freeze long -term federal grants to the institution.
Trump justified the action by accusing Harvard of promoting a dangerous ideology and promoting antisemiamism-a reference to Palestinian performances bursting in several American complexes including Harvard after the outbreak of war in the war. In March, the US Education Department announced that it would assure federal funds for 60 colleges and universities in response to these incidents.
Unlike many other institutions, Harvard has opposed Trump’s demands to hiring and abolish the initiative of diversity in entry and collaborate with federal immigration officers under the supervision of international students.
Harvard President Alan Garber has stated that the university “will not bargain away its independence or its constitutional rights.”
