“I am considering it very seriously,” a 64 -year -old Argentina’s diplomat said during a visit to Washington. ” “But the time of those discussions will come,” he said.
Traditionally, the next United Nations Secretary -General is expected to come from Latin America, after the tenure of the current General Secretary, Antonio Gutres of Portugal. However, any candidate will have to receive approval from all five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council – the United States, the United Kingdom, France, China and Russia.

GRC has led the IAEA since 2019 and is widely recognized for his participation under the supervision of Iran’s nuclear program and his participation for his visit to the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine, seized by Russian forces in 2022.

Another potential candidate is Mitchell Bachelet, former Chairman of Chile and East-Un High Commissioner for Human Rights. If chosen, she will become the first woman to lead the organization. However, his 2022 travel in China’s Xinjiang region criticized human rights groups and could make factor in political calculus.
