Maximizing the use of your Air Conditioner

Air conditioning is an essential device that ensures thermal comfort in homes, offices, shops, and vehicles.

Proper usage and regular maintenance are crucial for maintaining a cool and healthy environment. Additionally, maintaining an optimal temperature difference between indoor and outdoor environments helps achieve a pleasant and energy-efficient climate.

How It Works

In modern climates, air conditioners are indispensable for providing high levels of thermal comfort in homes, offices, and other enclosed spaces, especially in areas with hot and humid summers. They operate on complex physical and chemical principles, extracting warm air from the room, cooling it using refrigerants, and releasing cool air back into the room. Refrigerants, known as freon, facilitate heat transfer and cooling of the indoor air.

The latest generation of air conditioners no longer uses freon due to European Union regulations phasing out its use by 2025. The refrigerant in the air conditioning system is stored in the outdoor unit in liquid form and is released in a gaseous state after passing through the evaporator. These systems can also heat the air in winter if equipped with a heating function.

What is Air Conditioning?

Air conditioning is a specialized device used to alter and regulate the temperature, humidity, and air quality in enclosed spaces such as residential buildings, offices, cars, and commercial premises.

The appliance comprises two main components: the outdoor and indoor units. The outdoor unit consists of a compressor, condenser, fan, and a reservoir for the refrigerant. The indoor unit includes a fan, evaporator, filters, and a remote control.

Benefits of Using Air Conditioning in Summer

Air conditioning cools and purifies the air, reducing the inhalation of particles and irritants that can cause respiratory issues. Air conditioners can be used year-round, though they are most effective in summer when temperatures are unbearable. However, improper use can negatively impact health and increase expenses.

Choosing the Right Air Conditioner

When buying or replacing an air conditioner, consider several important factors to ensure you choose one that meets your needs and budget, as it is a long-term investment. Avoid purchasing during the warmer seasons to benefit from lower prices and installation costs. Decide on the type you need, with split units (comprising outdoor and indoor units) being most recommended for residential buildings. The size of your home will determine the required power of the air conditioner. Consider noise levels and energy efficiency, as newer models from reputable brands are quieter and should not exceed 60-65 decibels. Standard features include cooling, heating, and ventilation.

For efficient and trouble-free use, follow these expert recommendations:

  • Ensure doors and windows are closed before turning on the air conditioner to avoid excessive energy consumption and temperature instability.
  • Set the device to 22-26 degrees Celsius.
  • Avoid setting the temperature too low to prevent colds or back pain. The indoor temperature should be comfortable and lower than outside.
  • Regularly clean filters, especially when seasons change, to prevent dust and microbe buildup and ensure longevity.
  • Do not block the air conditioner with any objects, as this impedes proper air circulation and cooling.
  • Turn off the air conditioner when leaving home or when not in use to save money and extend the appliance’s life.
  • Take advantage of cooler evenings or mornings to ventilate your home by opening windows. Avoid using heat-generating appliances like ovens or stoves during the hottest parts of the day.

Cleaning Your Air Conditioner

Cleaning involves several steps:

  1. Disconnect the Air Conditioner: Unplug the appliance to prevent electrical faults.
  2. Clean the Indoor Unit: Condensation inside the unit can cause harmful bacteria, mold, or fungi. Use a clean cloth dipped in a water and vinegar or baking soda solution to wipe off dust. You can also use a solution of water and alcohol.
  3. Clean the Air Filters: Most filters are made of plastic and can be easily cleaned or replaced. Open the front cover, remove the filter, clean it with a cloth soaked in vinegar or under the shower, let it dry, and reinsert it.
  4. Sanitize the Evaporator: Located inside the indoor unit, the evaporator consists of a complex network of tubes where freon circulates. Regular cleaning is necessary to maintain functionality.
  5. Clean the Fan: Fans in both indoor and outdoor units circulate air over the evaporator and condenser, aiding in heat exchange. Dust and bacteria can accumulate on the fan blades, which can be cleaned with a damp cloth soaked in vinegar and water.
  6. Clean the Condenser: This component converts refrigerant from gas to liquid, initiating the cooling cycle again. Clean the condenser with a damp cloth during routine maintenance.
  7. Inspect and Clean Pipes: The pipes, typically covered with insulating foam to prevent energy loss, should be checked for damage and cleaned to enhance system efficiency.
