The new model draws its design inspiration from the current C-Class but surpasses the dimensions of both the previous E Coupé and C Coupé.
For several years, various spy photos and insider information have hinted that Mercedes-Benz has been preparing a completely new model to simultaneously replace two existing classes, the Coupe C and Coupe E. This speculation has now become reality, as the German automaker has introduced the CLE model. While at first glance it appears to be the C-Class in coupé form, it actually exceeds the dimensions of the previous E Coupe. The newcomer measures an impressive length of 4,850 mm, which is nearly 10 cm longer than the C-Class sedan and 1.5 cm longer than the E Coupe. In fact, the CLE is even 5 centimeters wider than the latest C-Class coupe.
The biggest surprise unfolded under the hood. For some time now, we have known that the current generation of the C-Class relies exclusively on four-cylinder engines, even in the AMG versions. However, the completely new CLE, which is based on the C-Class platform, can also house a six-cylinder engine (the CLE 450 4Matic variant), right from the start of its release and for the European market as well. All engine options are paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission and come standard with mild-hybrid technology, which adds an additional 17 kW/23 horsepower and 200 Nm of torque.
Later, we can expect additional versions of the CLE, including the highly anticipated AMG models, which are attracting significant attention as the engines they will receive remain uncertain. The CLE sits 15 millimeters lower to the ground compared to the C-Class, and customers will have the choice of three types of chassis: standard, sport with firmer dampers, and a chassis with adaptive dampers. It also features the option of rear-wheel steering (with 2.5 degrees of rotation) and sport steering with variable gear ratio. As for pricing, the price range is not yet known as the new model will be available on the market in November.
