Skype, one of the most widely used communication app, will officially close on 5 May.
For years, Skype was a Go-Two platform for video calls, especially the social media apps before offering their own messaging and calling features. However, its popularity has declined over time, and Microsoft has now decided to close it completely. This news was first reported by Techcrunch.
Despite being more than 40 million active users in 2024, Skype has struggled to compete with modern communication devices. At its peak, more than 300 million people regularly used the platform.

Microsoft will handle teams
Microsoft sees teams as complete replacement for Skype. “We understand that this is a major change for Skype users, and we are incredibly grateful to their support for years. Many insights collected from Skype have helped shape the development of teams in the last seven years. Moving forward, we are completely focused on improving and innovating the teams,” said the Microsoft 365.
Launched in August 2003, Skype played an important role in both personal and commercial communications. After about 22 years, Microsoft has decided to pursue and phase the app completely forward.
