Joaquin Phoenix was absolutely dreadful in Napoleon; I could have played him much better, Brian Cox said without any reservations.
Brian Cox, a star of the series Succession, critically assessed Joaquin Phoenix’s performance in Napoleon, a British drama about the French emperor, his rise to power, his relationship with his life love, and military or political tactics. The film is directed by Ridley Scott.
Cox doesn’t hold back on anything or anyone. At HistFest, he expressed his dissatisfaction with terrible movies, actors, theater critics, and politicians. Joaquin Phoenix took a big hit from him.
“Appalling. It’s terrible. Joaquin Phoenix was absolutely terrible in the film Napoleon. Really terrible. I don’t know what he was thinking. I think it’s his fault, and I feel like Ridley Scott didn’t help him. I could have played it much better than Joaquin Phoenix, I can tell you that. You might say it’s a good drama. No, it’s lies,” he said about the performance of the actor who played Napoleon.
He even didn’t spare Phoenix’s name. “I think he named himself well. Joaquin… wackeen… wacky. His performance was basically crazy,” Brian Cox said bluntly.
The actor also took aim at theater critics after they likened his stage role to Logan Roy from Succession: “It’s nonsense! Why make such comparisons? It’s so obvious. Most critics are foolish. Really, they are. Theater criticism is going downhill. When I think of the great critics of the past, no one compares to them.”
His latest target became Donald Trump. He began to hint that if re-elected, Cox’s stay in America might come to an end. “Ruling America is very difficult, and we really don’t need an idiot like Trump for that. I think Biden is a good man, but he’s too old,” the actor added. Brian Cox evidently needed to vent a lot of anger and release it into the world.
