Hurricane Helene has claimed at least 11 lives in North Carolina, with the toll expected to rise, Governor Roy Cooper announced at a Sunday press conference, according to AP.
“This is an unprecedented tragedy that demands an unprecedented response,” Cooper stated.
He noted that rescuers have yet to reach all affected areas due to blocked roads, damaged infrastructure, and severe flooding.
The governor urged residents to limit travel in the western part of the state to keep roads clear for emergency vehicles. Over 50 search teams are currently working in the region to locate and assist trapped individuals.
Supplies are being airlifted to areas around Asheville, a city renowned for its arts, culture, and natural beauty.
Hurricane Helene made landfall late Thursday in the sparsely populated Big Bend region of Florida as a Category 4 storm, the second-highest on the scale. By Sunday, it had caused over 60 fatalities across five states. In addition to the 11 deaths in North Carolina, South Carolina reported at least 23 fatalities, Georgia at least 17, Florida 11, and Virginia reported one death.
