In response to new findings, the company has implemented stricter guidelines for its suppliers.
Fashion retailer Shein has long faced criticism over its manufacturing practices, with concerns ranging from low wages and unsafe working conditions to the young age of its workers and harmful chemicals in its products. In a recent sustainability report, Shein acknowledged that some of its suppliers had employed underage workers to produce its goods.
The report revealed that two minors were found working in the factories of Shein’s suppliers last year. The company has distanced itself from the use of child labor, stating that they terminated contracts with those suppliers until the issue was resolved.
Implementing Stricter Measures
“Both cases were swiftly addressed through corrective actions, which included terminating the minors’ employment, ensuring all outstanding wages were paid, and providing medical check-ups for the affected workers,” Shein stated.
In light of these revelations, Shein has introduced stricter conditions for its suppliers. The company now pledges to immediately cut ties with any supplier found to be using child labor in the future. According to their annual report, these incidents occurred within the first nine months of 2023 and have not been repeated since.
