Sony has introduced groundbreaking technology at CES 2025, aiming to enhance the gaming experience by engaging an additional sense—smell.

According to the Tribune, this innovation could take immersive gameplay to a whole new level. The concept was demonstrated using the game The Last of Us. A two-minute video showcased a new way to play games, featuring an enclosed “box” environment. This box is lined with screens on the inside, creating a fully immersive visual experience. It also incorporates technology to emit scents, transporting players directly into the game’s world.

Bringing scents into gaming is technically complex and requires substantial space, making it more practical for gaming centers than home setups. However, the potential for immersive gaming is enormous.

While the innovation has sparked excitement, its demonstration with The Last of Us raised mixed reactions. “I really don’t want to smell anything from The Last of Us,” commented one player, referencing the post-apocalyptic setting of the game. Others found the idea intriguing, fueling their curiosity and imagination. “I think zombies smell like popcorn,” joked another fan of the game.

This technology could redefine gaming by engaging players in ways never before possible, offering a truly multi-sensory experience.
