Hundreds of items have disappeared from the British Museum in London. The American Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is investigating the disappearance of these items, which were allegedly sold to American buyers, according to a Monday report by BBC, as reported by TASR.

FBI agents stated that they are assisting the London Metropolitan Police in the search for 1,500 items that have either been lost or stolen. So far, 626 of these items have been returned, and another 100 have been located but not yet returned.

According to the BBC, the FBI also helped recover 268 items sold to a collector in Washington, which the museum claims belong to its collections. Another buyer based in New Orleans told the BBC that an FBI agent contacted him via email requesting information about two items he had previously bought on eBay.

Former Employee In March, the British Museum initiated legal proceedings against its former employee, Peter Higgs, for theft, damage, or sale of ancient artifacts on eBay. Higgs, who worked in the department of ancient Greek and Roman collections, denies the allegations.

There are civil proceedings against Higgs, but no arrests or criminal charges have been made in connection with the missing items.
