Claims have emerged suggesting that OpenAI, the American company known for its advancements in artificial intelligence, may release a new language model called GPT-5, also referred to as Orion, later this year.
However, as The Verge reports, the situation is somewhat unclear. OpenAI has provided conflicting statements, though they still hint at the possibility of exciting new developments. The Orion model is not expected to be immediately available through ChatGPT, and it remains uncertain when OpenAI might launch it.
Initially rumored for a December release, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman labeled the reports as “fake news” without providing further clarification. A spokesperson later clarified that OpenAI is not planning to release a product with the codename Orion but is indeed working on other groundbreaking technologies.
Orion is anticipated as a successor to GPT-4, though it’s unclear if it will be publicly branded as GPT-5. Reports indicate it could be up to 100 times more powerful than GPT-4. It’s still uncertain which parts of The Verge article Altman referred to as inaccurate, as he has not shared any additional details despite previous hints about Orion’s arrival. Altman later confirmed that significant updates are indeed on the way.
