Taxi drivers demanded changes to tax regulations, a cap on the number of taxis, and adjustments to age-related regulations.
On Wednesday afternoon, approximately 200 taxi drivers, including those from companies like Bolt and Uber, gathered in protest at Budapest’s Heroes’ Square and other locations. Their primary demand was a revision of tax rules for transport operators in Budapest, according to the news outlet 24.hu.
The demonstration was organized by the Taxi Drivers’ Interest Protection Association (Taxisok Érdekvédelmi Szervezete). Alongside tax reforms, the drivers called for a limitation on the number of taxi drivers and a “consolidation” of regulations related to the age requirements for taxi operators.
The protest did not disrupt traffic in Budapest, the report noted. However, the National Taxi Association (Országos Taxis Szövetség) opposed the proposal to limit the number of taxis in the capital, arguing that such a move would be unconstitutional. The two organizations have been in conflict for some time. Last year, the association emphasized that it truly represents the interests of taxi drivers and stated that it operates independently of corporate influence or funding, as reported by 24.hu.
