
The outbreak of Ebola has been officially declared in Kampala, run by the virus Sudan tension. Uganda officials monitored 534 contacts and deployed an experimental vaccine during the response.
According to the DPA news agency, on Saturday, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced the end of the outbreak of Ebola, which caught the capital of Uganda for about three months, resulting in four deaths. It marks the outbreak of another Ebola in Uganda over the last three years.
During the outbreak, 14 infections were confirmed, including four deadly. Ten patients were recovered. Health officials closely monitored 534 persons, who were in contact with infected patients. The last patient was discharged from the hospital on 15 March. The outbreak was officially declared after 42 consecutive days without new cases – an internationally recognized benchmark to end an Ebola epidemic.
The outbreak was caused by the Sudan stress of the Ebola virus, a particularly dangerous version for which there is currently no approved vaccine. In response, Uganda officials started a vaccination campaign using an experimental vaccine, working with the WHO and treated patients with antiviral drug ramdesivir.
Ebola is a rare but fatal disease, transmitted through direct contact with infected individuals with blood or physical fluid. Symptoms include severe headache, vomiting blood and acute muscle pain. According to Reuters, Uganda last fought with an Ebola outbreak in 2022, during which 55 out of 143 infected persons lost their lives.
