Astronomers have recently identified an asteroid named 2024 YR4, which presents a potential risk of colliding with Earth. The estimated date for this possible impact is December 22, 2032.
Measuring approximately 55 meters in diameter, the asteroid could cause significant damage upon impact, either by detonating in the atmosphere or creating a crater on Earth’s surface.
2024 YR4 was first detected on December 27, 2024, through the ATLAS observation system in Chile. Subsequent monitoring refined its trajectory and highlighted a possible close encounter with Earth. According to NASA, the asteroid is expected to pass within roughly 106,000 kilometers of Earth on December 22, 2032. However, due to potential deviations in its orbit, there’s a chance it could strike our planet, as reported by Euro News.
The asteroid has been classified at Level 3 on the Torino Scale, which assesses the impact risk of near-Earth objects. This level indicates that the asteroid warrants further observation but does not pose an immediate threat. Current estimates suggest a 1.2% chance of collision, prompting NASA to keep a close watch on its trajectory.
