The espionage targeted Western governments and military-industrial enterprises.

The Dutch military intelligence service (MIVD) has determined that the Chinese cyber-espionage operation, reported recently, was more extensive than initially believed. This was reported by the TASR news agency based on information from Reuters.

The hacking group, supported by the Chinese government and responsible for the 2023 cyberattacks, targeted at least 20,000 entities worldwide over several months, according to MIVD.

The Chinese Embassy in the Netherlands did not immediately respond to these allegations. However, Beijing typically denies accusations of cyber espionage and claims to be fundamentally opposed to any form of cyberattacks.

The Dutch military intelligence has urged organizations to activate security protocols that are employed in the event of a digital attack threat or occurrence.

In April, the Dutch military intelligence released an annual report stating that Chinese intelligence services had targeted the Dutch semiconductor industry as well as the country’s maritime and aerospace sectors.
