After the success of two films based on Frank Herbert’s iconic sci-fi novel Dune, Canadian director Denis Villeneuve is preparing for a third adaptation—but this time, with a fresh approach.
Following the two films set in the desert world of Arrakis, Villeneuve is now developing Dune Messiah, the adaptation of Herbert’s second book, which concludes the story of Paul Atreides, portrayed by Timothée Chalamet.
In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Villeneuve revealed that Messiah will be his final installment in the series. He explained that he’s taking his time with this film, treating it as a standalone piece.
“It’s crucial that people understand this was always intended as a diptych—two films adapting the first book,” Villeneuve said. “The third film, which is currently being scripted, will be something different and independent.” He also shared that if he returns to the Dune universe, he wants to bring a unique identity to the project. “Let’s say Dune feels complete to me in a way, and Dune Messiah will be something I approach with a different filmmaking philosophy,” he added.
In addition to Dune, Villeneuve is also working on other projects, including Rendezvous with Rama and Cleopatra. He hinted that after completing Dune Messiah, someone else might take over the franchise.
