The continuation of the legendary fairy tale is on the horizon. You’ll see it sooner than you might expect.
It looks like we’ll finally get to see the next installment of Shrek after nearly 15 years. Eddie Murphy, who voiced the iconic Donkey in the series, revealed in an interview with Collider that work on the film is already underway and shared when it might hit theaters.
“We started filming Shrek 5 a few months ago. We’ve completed the initial scenes and will continue working on it throughout this year until it’s finished,” the actor said.
“Shrek is really coming back, and Donkey will have his own film too. We’ll be working on that as well,” Murphy explained, confirming that fans can also look forward to a spin-off about Donkey. Donkey is one of the most beloved characters, and there have been rumors in the past about him getting his own movie.
Details about the film’s release accidentally leaked in the past. At the end of last year, the release date for the film was accidentally made public. The creators later retracted the information. An NBC Universal employee mistakenly posted on LinkedIn that the sequel would be released in 2025.
“You need to make sure you incorporate the core elements that audiences love and do everything to respect them. Then, work hard on building the story and new characters that will take you to entirely new places. The original cast is very important,” producer Chris Meledandri told Variety in April last year, outlining the nature of the animated film’s sequel.
