According to critics, the women’s uniform reveals too much.
Nike unveiled new uniforms for American Olympians in Paris, sparking a major controversy. Former and current athletes criticize the cut of the women’s attire, labeling it as sexist, reports The Sun.
Critics argue that the one-piece women’s garment is overly revealing, whereas the men’s uniform consists of a tank top and shorts that reach mid-thigh.
The pink suit features a highly cut bikini line, which has stirred up many female athletes. They question whether the design was consulted with any women.
“This is not elite athletic apparel for athletics. This is a costume born of patriarchal forces no longer welcome or needed to draw attention to women’s sport. Women’s kits should be empowering, mentally and physically. If this outfit were truly performance-enhancing, men would be wearing it,” wrote former American world champion Lauren Fleshman.
The Summer Olympic Games 2024 will take place in Paris this year from July 26 to August 11.
