This time, it will be a two-seater submarine, reportedly equipped with the best technology.
Ohio billionaire Larry Connor intends to partner with Triton Submarines to organize an expedition to the Titanic wreck. He aims to demonstrate that underwater travel can be entirely safe. He is confident that everything will go smoothly, as reported by the BBC.
“I want to show people around the world that while the ocean is immensely powerful, it can also be amazing, enjoyable, and truly life-changing if approached the right way,” the billionaire told The Wall Street Journal. The submarine will accommodate two people and the entire construction will cost $20 million.
Joining Larry in the depths of the Atlantic Ocean will be Triton Submarines’ co-founder Patrick Lahey, who has been working on the submarine project for over a decade. However, he had to pause work to wait for suitable and newer technology. The pair will board the Triton 4000/2 Abyssal Explorer, which is said to be safe and capable of diving to depths of 4,000 meters, 200 meters deeper than where the Titanic wreck lies. Seventy-four-year-old Larry is an adventurer. In the past, he went to space as a passenger on the Axiom 1 mission. He is also a certified NASA astronaut. Additionally, he has parachuted from a balloon at a record height of nearly 12 kilometers and journeyed to the Mariana Trench.
A similar expedition was organized last year. Onboard the unregulated Titan submarine from OceanGate, five people perished last summer when, after an hour and 45 min., the sub lost communication with the Canadian research vessel Polar Prince that was accompanying it. The situation worsened as the crew ran out of oxygen and subsequently died tragically.
