According to two sources cited by The Hollywood Reporter, Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach are already developing a sequel to Barbie. However, Warner Bros. has denied these claims.
Both creators have consistently stated they would only pursue a sequel if they could find a story worth telling. “What lies beneath the story? If I can uncover that deeper current, we’ll move forward. But if I can’t, then there’s no sequel,” Gerwig said in March 2024. Now, it seems she and her creative and life partner may have found that direction.
The Hollywood Reporter reports that Gerwig and Baumbach have allegedly pitched a concept for a sequel to Warner Bros. Though still in its “early stages,” the story idea has reportedly set the stage for preliminary contract negotiations. A second source confirms that discussions are underway but at a nascent stage.
Despite these claims, representatives for both the studio and the filmmakers have refrained from confirming the news. “This report is baseless,” said a spokesperson for the writers. Warner Bros. also dismissed the story, stating, “The THR report is inaccurate.”
