One of the scariest films from the Czech Republic, The Cremator, has claimed the top spot in a ranking of best horror films. Despite this acclaim, few people worldwide have actually seen it.
The film ranking website Letterboxd compiled a list of the best horror movies with only 5,000 to 50,000 views globally. These chilling films have all the hallmarks of great horror but simply haven’t reached a wider audience. Among them is the Czech director Juraj Herz’s 1960s classic The Cremator.
Released in 1968, this black-and-white horror stars Rudolf Hrušínský and is based on the novel of the same name by Ladislav Fuks. The story follows a crematorium worker, portrayed by Hrušínský, who becomes obsessed with the idea of humans as corpses destined to become dust and ash.
The protagonist, a disturbed psychopath, is drawn to fascist ideology, leading him down a dark path of betrayal, murder, and collaboration in mass atrocities.
