Karla Sofía Gascón has been nominated for Best Actress for her role in Emilia Pérez.
The official list of Oscar nominations was announced yesterday. For the first time ever, a transgender actress, Karla Sofía Gascón, has been nominated in the Best Actress category.
The 52-year-old Spanish actress received the nomination for her performance in Emilia Pérez, a musical crime drama produced by Netflix. The film follows the story of a drug dealer who undergoes gender transition surgery. Gascón stars alongside well-known actresses Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldaña.
Gascón has already achieved several prestigious accolades. She became the first transgender woman to receive a nomination in a film category at the 2025 Golden Globe Awards. In May last year, she won the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival.
Her Oscar nomination has sparked significant public interest, especially given the ongoing debates surrounding transgender rights in the U.S. According to People magazine, Gascón will compete in the Best Actress category alongside Cynthia Erivo (Wicked), Mikey Madison (Anora), Demi Moore (Substance), and Fernanda Torres (I’m Still Here).
