Moo Deng is taking over social media feeds everywhere. But what’s behind the hype?
This playful, energetic baby hippo loves to eat, play, and relax. If you’ve been scrolling through social media lately, chances are you’ve come across her.
Born at Kheow Open Zoo in Bangkok, Thailand, Moo Deng is a female pygmy hippo. Her name, translated from English, means “jumping pork,” which is also the name of a famous Thai pork dish known for being tough to chew.
The zoo’s caretakers set up a TikTok account for Moo Deng, and the two-month-old quickly became a sensation, amassing an incredible 2.5 million followers. Her popularity has spread to other platforms too, with nearly half a million fans on Facebook and tens of thousands on X (formerly Twitter).
Moo Deng has become a viral meme and a trendsetter. Even brands like Sephora have taken notice, creating a makeup look inspired by the little hippo. So, what’s the secret to her viral success?
The downside of popularity
For example, the Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Thailand has seen a 30% increase in visitors thanks to its viral baby hippo, as reported by CNN. While the marketing team likely celebrates the rise in ticket sales, the animal caretakers are less enthusiastic.
With growing fame comes challenges. Previously, we reported that Moo Deng has faced mistreatment from visitors. People have splashed water on her and thrown objects or food to wake her up when she’s sleeping during their visit.
In response, the zoo installed cameras in her enclosure and warned that legal action will be taken against anyone engaging in such unacceptable behavior.
If you want to see this adorable hippo in person, you don’t have to travel all the way to Thailand.
